Mrs. Florence “Serene” Boykins Ridley of 35719 Owens Grove Rd. Waverly Va., entered into eternal rest on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at the Golden Living Battlefield Park Nursing Home, Petersburg, Va. Born on February 18, 1931, Florence was the daughter of the late Leroy Boykins and Mattie Mae Gilliam Boykins. She was educated in the Sussex County School System and was a member of the Hickory Hill Baptist Church, Yale Va.
“Serene” was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Cooley Ridley; son, Calvin Roosevelt Ridley; daughter, Shirley Ann Boykins Chambliss; and brothers James I. Boykins and James V. Boykins.
Left to carry on her legacy are two daughters, Mary Ridley (Calvin Stringfield) of Wakefield, Va., and Frances Ridley of Texas; three sons, John Lee Ridley (Sophie Mae) of Wakefield, Va., Horace Lee Ridley and Ray Ridley of Petersburg, VA.; one brother, Roosevelt Boykins of Ivor, Va.; one sister, Mattie Lou Rowland of Wakefield, Va.; eighteen grandchildren, including one devoted granddaughter, Renea Ridley of Prince George, Va. who took care of her through her illness; and a host of great grandchildren , great- great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The funeral service for Mrs. Florence “Serene” Boykins Ridley will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday May 2, 2012 at the Hickory Hill Baptist Church 19825 Hickory Hill Rd. Yale, Va., with the Rev. Joe Capel, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Ridley may be viewed at the church one hour prior to service.
Public viewing will be on Monday, April 30, 2012 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and Tuesday, May 1, 2012 from 10:00am to 8:00pm at the J.L. Dodson and Sons Funeral Establishment.
The family is asked to assemble at the residence of her daughter, Mary Ridley (Calvin Stringfield) 9186 Birch Island Rd. Wakefield, Va., at 12:30 p.m. on the day of the service.
