Susie Virginia Knight( November 13, 1925 - March 19, 2016 )
“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”
John 14:1-4 (NKJV) On Saturday, March 19, 2016, Susie Virginia Edmonds Knight departed this life and entered into heaven and received her promotion to glory. With outstretched arms, Jesus along with a host of angels and some of her family that predeceased her to include her daughter the late Rev. Shirley V.K. Budd and her son the late Roger Earl Knight, greeted her and the welcome home celebration began. Susie was born November 13, 1925 and was raised in the Berkley area of Norfolk by her grandparents Augustus and Susie Edmonds who affectionately called her “Lil Sue”. She was the only girl with two brothers, and that formed the foundation of her feisty spirit that everyone who came in contact with knew well. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and afterwards attended Elizabeth City College in Elizabeth City, NC. She later married Joseph Knight and together they raised 5 children Shirley, Vivian, Helen, Gwendolyn and Roger. Susie was very passionate about teaching and she took every opportunity with her children and children in the neighborhood to teach them something that they had not already learned. You could not leave her presence without a clear understanding and sometimes she used choice words to make it plain. Having resided in Young Park for over 5 decades, everyone knew Ms. Knight. She taught in the old kindergarten of St. Paul C.M.E. Church and she retired from Norfolk Public Schools after serving as a Paraprofessional for over 25 years. She was a faithful member of St. Paul C.M.E. Church for over 60 years where she played the piano, sang in the choir and served on various church boards to include the Missionary Board and Stewardess Board. Susie also taught Sunday school and she loved the Lord. Susie resided in Petersburg, VA for the last three years of her life and she made meaningful memories for those that grew to love her and there were many, some of which were surrounding her during her last moments. Susie leaves to cherish her memory: Vivian Knight, daughter; Helen Douglas, daughter; Gwendolyn Wormley, daughter; Brenda Sorrell, daughter-in-law; Brian Knight, grandson; Frederick Harvey, grandson; Arvetta Diggs (Otis), granddaughter; Kelvin Douglas, grandson; Ebony Sorrell, granddaughter; Maurice Douglas, Jr., grandson; Tunisia Davis, granddaughter; Jared Wormley, grandson; Deidra Bellamy, granddaughter; 10 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren; Lou Hare, special sister/friend; Rev. Blanche Stewart, special friend; Iris Rahmings, special friend; Larry Thweatt, special friend; Teresa Petty, special friend; Wayne Prebor, II, special friend and a great host of nieces, nephews and friends. Public visitation for Ms. Susie Knight will be held on Friday, March 25, 2016 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the J. L. Dodson and Sons Funeral Establishment. Funeral service for Ms. Knight will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at 12:00 noon at the St. Paul C.M. E. Church, 310 E. Virginia Beach Boulevard, Norfolk, Virginia 23510 with Pastor Brandon Baum, Officiating. Interment will follow in the Roosevelt Memorial Park Chesapeake, Va.
