Mrs. Joyce P. Martin( May 29, 1943 - April 6, 2023 ) God has called another angel home. Mrs. Joyce Catherine Palmer Martin went home to be with the Lord on April 6, 2023. Born on May 29, 1943 in Halifax County, VA, she was the daughter of the late Myrtle Chaney Robinson and Frazier Taylor. Joyce or sometimes referred to as "Cat", was educated in the Halifax County School system. She was raised by her grandmother and accepted Christ at an early age at Mt Pleasant Baptist Church. Joyce was an active member at Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Church serving as Usher, and Women's Ministry and Sunday School member until her health declined. Mrs. Joyce P. Martin knew the benefits of hard work and dedication. She worked on a farm and was later employed by Lane Company for 34 years until the business closed. She also worked as a Nurse Aid for two years after retirement. Joyce loved to sew. But her greatest love was planting and growing flowers. She also loved to cook and always had a jar of preserves for you to enjoy. Joyce was a happy spirit. She never met a stranger, never held her tongue. Honesty was always the best quality. Joyce loved to laugh and smile. She could certainly spark a great conversation. Joyce was preceded in death by her grandmother, Frances Lipford; her mother, Myrtle Chaney Robinson; father, Frazier Taylor; sister, Mable Murray; brothers, Charlie Lewis Robinson and Leo Taylor; and son, Abraham Baker Jr. Mrs. Joyce Martin was previously married to Mr. Abraham Baker Sr.(deceased) and they had five children, Frankie Baker of Danville, VA, Shirley Baker-Thomas (Timothy) of Richmond, VA, Abraham Baker Jr (Clarice), Myrtle Christine Baker of Petersburg, VA and Samantha Baker (Sophia Gash-Baker) of Richmond, VA. Joyce later found the "love of her life", Wilbur Martin. Joyce and Wilbur began their journey on June 26,1999 until the day she left us. Joyce was a wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother and great friend. Including her children, Joyce is survived by her sister, Carrie Baldwin of Danville VA; brothers, Frazier Taylor Jr. (Geneva) of Prince George, VA, James Taylor (Loretta) of Texas, and Jimmy Merritt (Stephanie) of Danville, VA.;11 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
