Deacon Phillip Cary Whitehead Jones

( December 6, 1954 - August 6, 2023 )

Deacon Phillip Cary Whitehead Jones entered into eternal rest on Sunday, August 6, 2023 at his residence.

Phillip was born on December 6, 1954 to the late Bishop Theodore R. Jones, Sr. and Elder Minnie D. Jones.  He graduated in 1972 from Chatham High School in Chatham, Virginia.  Later in life, he joined the Army and honorably served his country for six years. After returning home from the military, he worked various jobs throughout his lifetime.

Deacon Phillip loved the Lord and accepted Jesus Christ at an early age under the leadership of his father, the late Bishop Theodore R. Jones, Sr. at the New True Vine Holiness Church and continued to serve under the leadership of his brother, Bishop Theodore R. Jones, Jr. He served the ministry faithfully until his decline in health. But, even on the days he wasn’t feeling his best, he always managed to make it into the house to give God praise.

Phillip met the love of his life, his devoted spouse, Lavern Valentine, at the age of fifteen.  He chased her around the world for 40 years, and in the year of 2012, they finally joined in holy matrimony.  Even though Phillip had no biological children, the love he had for the children that he called “his children,” ran deep. He treated them as though they were his natural children.

Phillip’s love for family ran strong.  The unconditional love that he showed to his family and friends will truly be missed, especially his grandbabies that brought that extra joy to his life.  The love he leaves will be greatly missed but a legacy that will never be forgotten.

Phillip was preceded in death by his parents, Bishop Theodore R. Jones, Sr., and Elder Minnie D. Jones; and one sister, Gladys A. Jones.

He leaves to cherish his memories, a devoted wife of twelve years, G. Lavern Jones; two stepsons, Bryan Valentine (Angel) of Jacksonville, Florida and Adrian Carter (Adrianne) of Danville, Virginia; one step daughter, Erika Murphy (Shemar) of Danville, Virginia; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; four brothers, Bishop Theodore R. Jones, Jr., (Rosalind), Elder Randolph S. Jones (Lucille), Elder David Jones and Mark Jones (Willa); two sisters, Nancy P. Jones (Roy Morrison) and Pastor Mary Ann Jones; two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Valentine (Demeta) and Danny Valentine; three sisters – law, Inez Banks Dubose (Thomas), Joyce Chandler and Patricia Wilson; two uncles, Charlie Jones and Anderson Jones (Elizabeth); two aunts, Sarah Goodwin and Annie Pearl Coleman; and a host of other relatives and friends.
