Nile Nelson Stone, 70, son of the late Amos Stone, Sr and Rosa Bell Irvin Stone, peacefully transitioned on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA.  

 

He was a beloved Father, Grandfather, Brother and Friend, born on February 12, 1954 in Pittsylvania County, VA. 

 

 Nile was educated in the Pittsylvania County School System and was last employed with Whittle Plywood of Chatham, VA.   He often could be seen doing odd jobs for people in the community.  Nile lived a simple life and enjoyed having fun with his family and friends. He could be stubborn and hardheaded but he never forgot about his family.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Robert, Thomas, Joe Lewis, Albert, Amos and Willie Henry Stone: five sisters, Mary, Isabell, Maddie Ann, Katie and Shirley Stone.

Nile is survived by a son, Nelson (Shanette) Witcher of Danville, VA; three grandchildren, Shia James, Zhahiem Witcher and Makayla Witcher all of Danville, VA; one great grandchild,  Makayla Jackson of Danville, VA; one brother, Gilmore Stone of Winston Salem, NC; six sisters, Rosa Stone of Chatham, VA, Linda Jennings, Betty Hodnett, Henrietta Stone, Marilyn Stone all of Danville, VA and Mable Reynolds of Charlotte, NC;   Special friends, the Calloway Family, Curtis, Willie, Sherman, Anderson  and sisters as well as the Carter Family and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  

Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Nile Nelson Stone will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel of J.L. Dodson and Sons Funeral Establishment, 447 Old South Main Street, Danville, Virginia. Pastor Percy Younger, Eulogist.   

A public viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.

The family is asking relatives and friends to assemble at the funeral establishment at 1:50 p.m.  on the day of service.
