Derrick Lamont Mays, 42, of Danville, VA transitioned to eternal rest on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at the Golden Living Facility of Greensboro, NC.
Born February 23, 1979 in Danville, VA, he was the son of Toni Mays Buffong and, with respect to his father the, late Americus Murphy Sr. He attended the Danville City Schools and worked at JTI until his health declined.
Derrick was a loving and caring person who had the gift of gab. To know him was to love him. Derrick loved his family. He was a drummer and loved music.
Derrick knew Christ at an early age and even toward the end he gave his life back to Christ.
Those left to cherish his memories are his loving mother, Toni Mays Buffong (Kenneth); two loving daughters, Khamauri Mays of Danville, VA and Makayla Martin of Danville, VA; his sisters and brothers, Toni Harris of High Point NC, Roderick Mays (Katamara), David Mays (Shamekia), Gaynell Murphy, Daniel Fitzgerald and Ahmad Lowe all of Danville, VA, Leon Murphy (Toni) of Newport News VA, and Darlene Autry (Norman) and C. LaWanda Young (Edgar) both of Durham, NC.
He also leaves to mourn, a loving friend, Jill Martin of Danville, VA; two aunts, Maggie Mays of Danville, VA and Donna Stephens of Chase City, VA; one uncle, Samuel Mays of Danville VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A public viewing for Derrick Lamont Mays will be held on Friday, April 16, 2021 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the J.L. Dodson and Sons Funeral Establishment – Danville, Va.
Homegoing Celebration for Derrick Lamont Mays will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2021, 1:00pm at the Highland Memorial Park, 3049 N. Main St. Danville, VA.
Family and friends are asked to assemble at the residence of his brother, David Mays (Shamekia ) 124 Vinton Place Danville, Virginia on the day of the service at 12:00p.m.
Masks are required at all visitations and services and attendance may be limited. Attendees are asked to adhere to social distancing guidelines.
