OBITUARY
On February 12, 1938 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, Ben and Ernestine Irby Younger welcomed their knee-baby and 9th child, Albert Younger, into this world. However, it was on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 that the Heavenly Father welcomed Albert with open arms into his forever home. In addition to his parents, Albert was preceded in death by his wife, Gracie; son, Sherman; brothers, Montague, Jesse, Benny, Willie, Isaiah, Charlie, Motley and Sherman; and his “sis”, Lena Johnson.
Albert was Ben & Ernestine’s last surviving child.
At an early age, Albert accepted Christ and became a member of Rosebud Missionary Baptist Church in Chatham. Even after leaving Chatham, he would return to Rosebud decades later and serve faithfully until his health began to fail. Albert wore several hats at Rosebud as he gladly served where he was needed. He served in the trustee ministry, usher ministry and custodial ministry. He had a quiet spirit but loved to praise the Lord.
Albert’s education began in the Rosebud community’s one room red house, just above the family farm, known as “Rosebud School”. His education would later be completed at Northside High School in Gretna. Upon graduating, Albert would enlist and serve several years in the United States Air Force. After fulfilling his military obligation, he moved to Jersey City, New Jersey where he met and married Gracie Anderson.
On his return to Virginia, Albert made Danville his home and spent many years working at Dan River Mills until his retirement. Outside of work, his favorite pastime was bowling. He frequently bowled with and against his cousins James, Mary and Jerry in a weekly bowling league. But he especially looked forward to showing off his bowling skills and competing against his brother Motley and cousin Latin when they came in town. In addition, Albert loved driving around the countryside with his friend Lucy and going to his favorite “breakfast spot”, BiscuitVille on Riverside, every morning.
Albert leaves to cherish his memory: one daughter, Bridgette Payne of Fayetteville NC, one son, Thermo Younger (Joanne) of Danville VA; daughter-in-law, Jeanette Younger of Danville, VA; grandchildren: Bresha Younger, Kason Payne, Thermo Younger Jr., Scott Long, Thermo Wills, Pilanda Younger; 10 great-grandchildren; a host of family and friends and his most special friend, Ms. Lucy Kates.
“This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled”
