Mathew Cooper was born on April 10, 1934, in Emerson Arkansas to the late Elmer and Annie Cooper. He was the seventh child out of eleven. He was preceded in death by his sisters Johnnie Mae Young, Elonia Robinson, Addie Williams, and brothers Clyde Cooper, Curtis Cooper, Grover Cooper, M.C. Cooper and Clarence Cooper.
At an early age he attended Pine Hill CME church in Emerson Arkansas and that time he was sprinkled as a baptism. Several years later, under Pastor Jerry W. Gash (Loving Son-In Law and Friend) at New Name Baptist Church, he once again devoted his life to christ. As a member, he was in charge of the recycling ministry. Everyone that knew Mathew, knew he performed this role well. He attended McMittress High School up until the 10 th grade and started working at Partee Flooring Mill in Magnolia Arkansas.
On October 19, 1955, he married his wife, Feberlene Cooper and gained a bonus daughter, Doris. They moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1958 where they began their new chapter as a family.
When he first arrived in California, he lived with his brother Clyde and worked at the bakery for several years. In 1965, they welcomed his first born son Daryl, two years later in 1967 they welcomed another son Devin. His family was now complete and Mathew (Shot) was a beaming dad of two boys that gave him joy and lots of laughter. Mathew’s career moved into another direction when he began working at Varec as a welder and molder of airplane parts. During his working career, he also had a maintenance business for several years. Many will say he was a jack of all trades. In his latter years, you would always see him in his blue 1971 Ford Pickup truck doing some type of work to make a dollar. As he would say, “Baby the truck does not move unless money is being made”.
No one was ever a stranger to him; they were always welcomed into his home with hospitality. He loved playing dominoes and gardening. In fact, relatives and friends would come from all over the city just to get some of his collard greens out of the back yard. He had the best vegetable garden in the city of Compton. He enjoyed all sports but loved the horses. (RaceTrack)(BookieJoint)
