Mrs. Veola Reed Martin

December 18, 1947 - March 23, 2023

On December 18, 1947, God allowed us to borrow Veola Delores Martin, loving known as “Toot.” She was born to the late Isom Reed and Lula Adams Reed in Darlington, South Carolina. During her childhood, the family moved to Danville, Virginia, to the neighborhood that many know as Almagro. Growing up she attended Mt. Zion Holiness Church, under the leadership of Bishop Ruby G. Woodson.

Toot spent some of her adult years in New York before returning home to Danville, to Almagro, with her family and friends. She was vibrant, spunky, and outspoken. She stood approximately 5 feet tall, but she was fearless and would always give you a good laugh. She rarely answered to you calling her Veola, but if you say “Toot” she would look at you and say, “What do you want?” and then laugh. Throughout her life, she laughed and always showed loved.

Thirty years ago, on her birthday and surrounded by loved ones, she married Donald Martin. He didn’t know what he was getting into, but he loved her unconditionally and we loved him for loving her. She was preceded in death by both parents, who loved her dearly.

Toot leaves to cherish her loving husband, Donald and her sister, Louise (Dale) Miller. She also gave birth to three children: Michael  (Danny) Reed (Donna), Sheila (Tammy) Reed (Nathaniel), and Damion Lewis. From those children, she gained four grandchildren: Quanisha Reed, Devontae Reed, Damion Reed, and Diamond Reed. She was blessed to have eight great-grandchildren: Kayleb Wilson, Egypt Reed, Diamond Reed, Azzuree Reed, Amirah Reed, Zamarion Henry, TyDietra Reed, and Christian Reed. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who became family.
