Mr. Elree Core was born on July 26, 1927 and was educated in the Goldsboro North Carolina Public School System.
In 1949 Mr. Core joined the U.S. Army and served diligently for 23 years. He toured Vietnam and Indochina where he received many awards and medals. Elree served as a Master Chef in the Army. When he retired, all who knew him benefitted from his fantastic cooking skills. His sweet potato pies were especially delicious and often requested.
In 1972, Elree met and later married Minnie Cooley. He was a faithful member of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Petersburg, Virginia until his health declined. Mr. and Mrs. Core could regularly be found in their favorite seats bright and early at the 7:30am service at Mt Olivet.
Mr. Core entered into eternal rest on November 13, 2018 surrounded by love. He was predeceased by his sisters, Gladys Richardson, Mary Core, and Corine Addison; brothers, Thomas Core, Jesse James Core, Eddie Lee Core, O’Berry Core, John Henry Core, and Leroy Core.
Left to love and cherish his memory are his loving wife of 46 years, Minnie Cooley Core of Ettrick, Va.; his devoted son, Herbert Wynn Jr., who stayed by his side to the end; two grandsons, Alexander Wynn of Petersburg, Va. and Herbert Wynn III (Monica) of Chesterfield, Va.; granddaughter, Katrina Wynn of Richmond, Va.; great grandson, Herbert Lee Wynn IV of Chesterfield, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
We know to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. And, although Elree will be missed dearly, we know he is in God’s bosom and at peace. Rest assured we will see him again, for it’s not a question of if, but a question of when! Well done Pop, Well done.
Public viewing will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 from 9am to 8pm at the J. L. Dodson and Sons Funeral Establishment.
Celebration of Life service for Mr. Elree Core will be held on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at 11:00am, at the Mount Olivet Baptist Church, 800 Augusta Avenue, Petersburg, Va., 23803 , Rev. Dr. Wesley K. McLaughlin, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Chester, Va. with full military honors.
The family will assemble at 9:45 a.m. on the day of service and will receive relatives and friends at the residence, 3500 East River Road Ettrick Va., South Chesterfield County.
