Obituary

Mrs. Gloria Mae Brown Campbell was called home to glory on Friday, September 27, 2024, at Petersburg Healthcare Center of Petersburg, Virginia.

Gloria was born on July 12, 1944, to the late Maggie Brown Sykes and Joseph Brown in Petersburg, Virginia where she lived most of her life.  She attended Petersburg Public Schools through the twelfth grade.  She did not complete, but went back to school and obtained a GED.  She was formerly employed at Central State Hospital.  After retirement, she went into Home Health Care.

She married a military man, Kenneth Campbell, in 1981 and became a widow in 1995.  She never remarried.

She was a devoted family member who loved spending time with her three children, family and friends.  She was always there to help support in any way she could.  She developed numerous friendships over the years and a few of them have been lifelong friends.  She was well known by many people because of her LOVE of BINGO.  Her family lovingly called her the BINGO Queen.  She also loved to dance.  She was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.  She was a member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church of Petersburg, Virginia.

In her later years, she loved listening to music especially gospel.  She loved and believed the LORD.  As her mental state declined, she would call on the LORD more often and ask HIM to help her.  She took pleasure from being around and watching small children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Maggie Brown; three brothers, James Mayfield, Steve Mayfield and Joseph Brown, Jr.; one sister, Alice Donald and her husband, Kenneth Campbell.

She leaves to cherish in loving memory her three children, Shiela (Ted) Faircloth of Henrico, Alphonsa (Jennifer) Brown of Virginia Beach and Patricia (Nat) Daniel of Hopewell; four siblings, Eliza Shine and Carolyn Eley of Petersburg, Delores (Tina) Austin of Massachusetts, and Tony Mayfield of Iowa; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, and one great- great grandchild.  Several nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends and two devoted friends James Thomas and Anna Jackson. A devoted niece Lisa Salih which they had a special Bond.
