Obituary
On Wednesday, January 26, 2022, Hilda Childress Martin peacefully entered into her eternal home at her residence in Dry Fork, VA. She was born July 24, 1939 in Pittsylvania County to the late Willis Childress and the late Elizabeth Anderson Childress.
Throughout her life Hilda was employed as a cook for the Green Lantern hotel and Hargrove Military Academy, a nanny, a foster parent, and a production member at Lane Company.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, talking on the telephone, and spending time with her family.
Hilda was a lifetime member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church where throughout the years she proudly served as a member of the usher board, president of the gospel chorus, and president of the kitchen committee.
She was preceded in death by her second husband, Otis Martin; two daughters, Sheila Dodson Hunt and Laura Ann Dodson; two sons, Timothy Wayne Dodson and David Lee Dodson; her sisters, Minnie Anna Childress, Fannie K. Barksdale, Pearl Townes, and Dollie M. Dodson; her brothers, Little Tom Childress Sr., and Lionel Anderson; foster children, Rosa Thompson,David Glass, Clay Fuller and Cynthia Wimbush. She was the last of her generation.
Hilda leaves to cherish her memories, one daughter, Cynthia Dodson of the residence; four sons, Charles Dodson (Robin) of the residence, Antonio Dodson (Nikki) of Dry Fork, VA, Raleigh Milton Dodson of Danville, VA, and Carroll Dodson of Chatham, VA; former husband, Raleigh Dodson of Danville, VA; sisters, Loretta Childress of Chatham, VA, Queenie Gregory of Altavista, VA and Sylvia Miller of Chatham, VA; foster children, Phoebe Witcher, Jimmy and Percy Thompson , and Lamont Adams; daughter in law, Judy Ann Dodson of Danville, VA, sisters in law, Eleanor Childress of Chatham, VA, Alma Dodson of Danville, VA, Carolyn Dodson of Chatham, VA, Margaret Robertson (Kenneth) of Chatham, VA , and Violeen Dodson of Chatham, VA; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Celebration of life services for Mrs. Hilda C. Martin will be conducted on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at 1:00pm at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church, Chatham Virginia with Rev. Anthony Ferebee, The Mount, Chesapeake, Virginia, Eulogist and Pastor Sylvester Townes of Truth and Worship Outreach Ministries Danville Virginia, Officiating. Interment will in the Hopel Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery 4129 Dry Fork Road, Dry Fork Virginia.
Family and friends are asked to assemble at the residence, 4257 Dry Fork Rd. Dry Fork VA at 11:45am on the day of the service.
A public viewing will be held on Monday, January 31, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00p.m. at the J. L. Dodson and Sons Funeral Establishment-Danville, Virginia.
Mrs. Martin will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the celebration of life service.
