Ms. Charlene Marie Whitehead "Pokey"

November 25, 1982 - August 8, 2023
Ms. Charlene Marie Whitehead "Pokey"

Obituary

Charlene Marie Whitehead entered into eternal rest on August 8, 2023 at Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

She was born on November 25, 1982 to Mr. Arthur Whitehead, who survives, and the late Iris Marie Carter Whitehead.  “Pokey” as she was affectionately called by her family and friends received her GED in Richmond, Virginia.  This was one of her proudest moments she almost caused her sister, Christie, to get a ticket, so she could make her graduation.

“Pokey” was so full of life and wanted those around her to enjoy life.  She had a way of making everyone around her happy, regardless of the situation.  Even in her decline in health, she still pushed to live every moment to the fullest and make every moment count.  Some of her favorite sayings were “dolla make ya holla” and “God got it!”

She was a member of the Greater Living Word Ministries under the leadership of her pastor, who she loved, Apostle Loretta Murray, where she served faithfully until she was unable to attend services due to the decline in health.

“Pokey” was a mother to her sisters and brothers, but especially to her big sister “Christie.”  She was joyful, had a heart of gold and if she had you had.  Her feisty and joyful spirit of love will be missed tremendously by her family and throughout her community.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Iris Marie Carter Whitehead; her maternal grandmother, Mary Carter; her paternal grandmother, Ruth Whitehead and a aunt, Flora Carter.

“Pokey leaves to cherish her memories, two daughters, Indeya Walden and Essence Thompson; one grandson, Nesiah Thomas; three sisters, Christie Carter (Freddie), Sheri Whitehead (Michael), Shenice Whitehead and a “special lil sister”, M’Kya Hunter Evans; four brothers, Arthur Carter, Travis Whitehead (LaTisha), Demetrius Whitehead and Justin Jones; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends,
