Bertha C. Hayes
July 4, 1925 - December 5, 2013
Mrs. Bertha Elizabeth Crump Hayes, formally of 1311 Beazley Street Petersburg, Va., received her wings and took flight to her heavenly home on Thursday, December 5, 2013.
Bertha was born to the late John W. Crump, Sr. and Ruth L. McCray Crump on July 4, 1925 in Dinwiddie County, Va. She was baptized and joined the Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, Va. at an early age. She attended the Dinwiddie County Training school. Bertha worked at Central State Hospital, Petersburg, Va. and was a homemaker. She enjoyed the finest things in life but especially serving the Lord daily.
Bertha was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mark E. Hayes, and a devoted and close friend, Roy Hill. She was also preceded in death by her loving sister and brothers, Lillian, John Jr., Samuel, Cliff, Ernest and Eddie.
Bertha served faithfully as a Missionary at her beloved Olive Branch Baptist Church in Dinwiddie, Va. She loved to quote her favorite scriptures Psalm 23, John 14 and Philippians 4:13. Bertha was also an Eastern Star, and fellowshipped at many area churches.
Her strength and commitment to family was always evident. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. As the family matriarch, Bertha was a direct line to God’s ear interceding in prayer for those she loved, and for those people God laid on her heart to pray for. She was a driving force behind the family staying connected over the years. Bertha’s love of people combined with her willing heart to be a servant of God touched many people in addition to her family. Bertha cherished her memories of Olive Branch and Dinwiddie her home place. Going through numerous bouts of illness she demonstrated a steadfast faith in God and an undeniable stubbornness to remain with those she loved. She continued to P.U.S.H. (Pray Until Something Happens).
The family reminisces about Bertha’s honesty and straight forwardness. She embodied unconditional love and support, and taught many people how to be confident and to love one’s self. She taught many of us how to PRAY and call on Jesus. Bertha loved sharing old family stories and stayed connected with family and friends. Her humor and wit were contagious.
Bertha was a mother and grandmother to all who came in contact with her. To cherish her memory, Bertha leaves behind a devoted and loving son, John H. Hayes, Sr.; devoted and loving daughter, Shirley Thompson; two loving and devoted grandchildren, John H. Hayes, Jr., Siobhan (Jennifer)N. Xavier (Merrie) of Killeen/Fort Hood, Texas. She also leaves behind a loving and devoted sister, Leona C. Hill, a loving and devoted brother in law, John L. Hill, a loving and devoted niece, Mrs. Roberta C. Carey, a loving and devoted nephew, Maurice Taylor; devoted cousins and family friends, Deaconess Ann Payton, Mr. Lloyd A.
