Mr. Thomas Parker Atkins, formerly of Hopewell, VA, has transitioned to the next sphere of existence. Mr. Atkins was the son of the late Mr. Luther Atkins and Mrs. Mary P. Atkins. Thomas grew up in Hopewell, VA and graduated from Carter G. Woodson High School.
From his early youth, Thomas was affectionately known as “TP”. He was an inquisitive child who was anxious to learn new skills. This led to his mastering the art of trumpet playing and drawing. His skills at drawing were such that he was able to teach his little brother, Mark, how to draw.
Thomas’s fun loving personality garnered many friends. One of his closest friends was the late Mr. Charles Kelly of Hopewell,VA. In fact, they were so close that many people thought they were brothers. The two grew up together in the home of Thomas’s parents.
Thomas was baptized into the Christian faith at an early age. His hobbies included listening to gospel music and pulling pranks on his cousin. He loved to dance and was a connoisseur of the music genre known as the Motown Sound. His siblings share many fond memories of their beloved brother. One particular memory they readily recall is how much food he consumed without gaining a pound. No matter how much Brunswick Stew he ate, along with vast amounts of his mother’s homemade rolls and pound cake, he maintained his very slender 6 ft, 3 in frame, even as he advanced in age. Friends and colleagues nicknamed him “Slim” as he became an adult, often saying they wish they shared his dietary habits and enviable physique.
For many years, Thomas was employed as a Journeyman Glass Cutter. His inquisitive nature and ability to quickly acquire knowledge, resulted in his later mastering the art of glassblowing.Thomas is survived by four younger siblings - Brenda Atkins, Sandra Atkins, Nancy Atkins, and Mark Atkins. His memory will also be cherished by a host of extended family members and friends.
